one room challenge - week 4

It's holding true that week four is the hardest!

We definitely made progress this week, but because Charlie had to work late, and severe weather forced us to put our work setup away to get both cars into the garage, we didn't get quite as much done as I had hoped.

All of the baseboards got installed, caulked, filled, sanded, and painted, but we ran out of time to get the quarter round on. The mirror also went up, and we were ready to install our shelves this weekend when I realized I had cut the second shelf one inch too short! This means we now have to go back to the store, purchase another board, do another two coats of primer and two coats of paint, cut it down to the right width with a table saw, and then use a miter saw to get it to the correct length. All because of a one inch mistake. I was so mad at myself I had to abandon this project to try again this weekend. I also got about a third of the shower walls tiled. I had hoped to have most, if not all, of the tiling finished by now, so this will be my number one priority this weekend.

To top it off I'm also having a problem getting our fabricator to respond in a timely manner. They were supposed to come out this week for measurements, but have quit responding to my emails. I'm assuming it's because we have such a small project, but it's upsetting because they used to be fantastic and I've referred many clients to them. As a backup we have another company coming out this evening to give us an estimate. I'm now a bit nervous about finishing on time since our plumber can't come out until our fabricator has installed our marble countertop.

I'm looking forward to getting over this week four slump and will hopefully have much more to share for week five!

Here is a recap of our to-do list:

  • waterproof shower walls (finished!)

  • finish tiling floor/shower floor (finished!)

  • tile shower walls and niche (walls this week, niche finished!)

  • paint touch-ups (finished!)

  • install baseboards and trim (finished!)

  • install crown moulding (week 6)

  • install open shelving (this week)

  • plumbing fixtures for shower and vanity (early week 6?)

  • shower glass enclosure (not going to happen!)

one room challenge - week 3: progress

Our biggest accomplishment this week was getting both our shower floor and the remainder of the bathroom floor tiled and grouted. You may have seen on snapchat the hundreds of tiny cuts we had to make for the perimeter of our shower and for the threshold where the tile meets the bedroom carpet. I was initially hesitant about choosing this tile for the floor because I knew how tedious it would be to install, but in the end I think the extra effort was definitely worth it!

We did get all of the baseboards cut and ready to install, but I've been sick since Friday, so that task has been moved to this weekend. We also have both the plumber and fabricator scheduled to come out during week 5. This means we'll likely not be able to get the glass enclosure ordered and installed in time for the reveal on week 6, but it's not essential for the transformation so I'm not going to worry about it too much! This week we'll be spending most of our time tiling and grouting the shower walls – the last major piece of the renovation!

Here is a recap of our to-do list:

  • waterproof shower walls (done!)
  • finish tiling floor/shower floor (done!)
  • tile shower walls and niche (this week)
  • paint touch-ups (done!)
  • install baseboards (this week) and trim (done!)
  • install crown moulding (week 6)
  • install open shelving (this week)
  • install vanity (week 5)
  • install marble countertop (week 5)
  • plumbing fixtures for shower and vanity (week 5)
  • shower glass enclosure (week 6?)
  • put up new mirror (this week)
  • new roman shade for window (ordered)
  • artwork and styling (week 6)

one room challenge week 2: the look

Hello! I almost forgot how quickly the one room challenge flies by. Last week we finished all of the touch-up paint, painted all of the new trim and shelving, put up the door trim that has been MIA since we did demo (last October!), and put the first coat of Red Guard waterproofing on the shower walls. Since this may be your first time joining me, or in case you have forgotten since the last challenge, I figured I'd share our design plan with you again. This is staying the exact same as it was during the last challenge mostly because I've already purchased everything.

These shelf brackets are a new addition to the design plan. They arrived yesterday, but instead of the two sets I ordered, they only sent one! Thankfully they're correcting the problem and the other set should be on the way to me shortly.

On the agenda for this week:

1) Install and grout our shower floor tile, 2) attach all baseboards, 3) install vanity mirror, 4) schedule fabricator and plumber, and 5) begin tiling our shower walls. The weather has been iffy recently, so I'm really hoping it cooperates with us this week so we can cut our tile.

Here is a recap of our to-do list:

  • waterproof shower walls

  • finish tiling floor/shower floor

  • tile shower walls and niche

  • paint touch-ups (done!)

  • install baseboards and trim (done!)

  • install crown moulding

  • install open shelving

  • install vanity

  • install marble countertop

  • plumbing fixtures for shower and vanity

  • shower glass enclosure

  • put up new mirror

  • new roman shade for window

  • artwork and styling
