one room challenge - week 1

I can't believe it's already One Room Challenge time again! Last challenge I remodeled our laundry room (you can see the process here), and this time around we're tackling a major project in our master bathroom. I also just realized I never shared final photos from our last challenge, so I'll be doing that soon!

We've lived in our little house since April 2014 and have not used this bathroom a single time. I hadn't even opened up the cabinets until we started demo a few weeks ago! The shower felt like a cave and there had been plumbing issues in the past so you could see mold in all of the grout and caulking. It was so bad that I opted to "shower" at the kitchen sink while we remodeled our guest bathroom

Here are some before photos of the space:

That is gold glitter streaking the countertops, complete with an original 1970's seashell sink!

Can you see why we refused to shower in here?

I had major plans to remodel the bathroom to make better use of the space and got Charlie on board to turn it into this:

Which would have been amazing, right? Unfortunately our quotes for the plumbing alone were coming in at over $7,000, and I lost Charlie's interest pretty quickly. He said we could still do it, but I could tell he wasn't thrilled so I went back to the drawing board.

We're now keeping all major plumbing in the same place, but opening up the shower by cutting the walls in half and adding a frameless glass enclosure. Along with taking out the soffit to raise the ceiling in the shower to 8', this will completely open up the space.

It may not be as fancy as before, but it will definitely be a major upgrade from our current situation, and now that we will have two bathrooms it will feel like we have a whole new house!

We've started demo and are almost finished, but it has been a very slow process. We're not just tearing through it since this is connected to our bedroom and we're trying to keep drywall dust down to a minimum. What would take a professional crew only a couple of hours to finish has taken us a couple of weeks! So far we've removed some of the drywall, taken out the hideous blue pocket door, and put in a new door to match our other interior doors.

The vanity is scheduled to arrive tomorrow and fixtures and finishes are starting to be shipped out. If you want to see some of the selections you can check out the Pinterest board I've started!

We're in for a long 6 weeks! Make sure you check out the other bloggers taking on the One Room Challenge, and a big thank you to Calling it Home for hosting this challenge to get me motivated to tackle such a big project in our home!
