e-design: contemporary eclectic bedroom in iowa

Hello! Today I'm sharing another recent e-design completed for a client located in Iowa. The main goal with this design was to help make their master bedroom feel both brighter and more modern. Their bedroom had not received much attention since they were renovating other parts of their house, which I can definitely relate to, since it has taken me almost three years to finally start thinking about ours!

BEFORE

Their style was contemporary eclectic, and they loved the beautiful windows in their room and wanted to find a way to not have them so covered up. We chose these roman shades (fabric: winding leaves in lapis) with a blackout lining from The Shade Store. These could be pulled all the way up to let light in during the day, and felt much lighter and brighter than the existing window treatments even when pulled down in the evenings.

The photography was chosen to represent places they have lived and traveled, and after going back and forth between a few lamp options, we ended up deciding on the modern Flynn table lamp from Serena & Lily which are a favorite of mine!

The walls will be painted Benjamin Moore Classic Gray, which will freshen up the room and go well with their existing wood trim. They also have children and didn't want an all white duvet cover, so we decided on this striped linen bedding from Restoration Hardware to keep with the light and contemporary feel of the space.

BEFORE

The existing floor plan was kept and two faux sheepskin rugs were added to bring in some texture.

As always, out of respect for my clients who have paid for their design I will only disclose a few sources in this post. If you would like information on a specific item, please e-mail me!

master bathroom before + after

It's finally time for me to share our complete master bathroom transformation!

This biggest difference was made by taking out the ceiling soffit above the sink and shower and partially removing the shower walls. This turned the cave-like shower into a super bright and happy place to get ready in the morning. I've envisioned this space since day we moved in, and I'm so happy that after two long years we finally have a master bathroom we can use!

When we framed out the new shower we were able to make a slightly larger door opening, and we gained about one inch on each side of the shower which makes a huge difference in such a small space. We also replaced the rough-in drain so we could use this square drain cover that tied into the herringbone pattern in our tile.

AFTER

There used to be zero storage, so we built-in a shower nook to keep everything out of sight.

AFTER

We removed the cabinet above the toilet, added open shelving, and replaced the toilet.

AFTER

In this back corner we removed an awful bright blue pocket door and added a double towel rod.

serena and lily tent sale picks

Serena and Lily is having a major sale right now, and for the next two days they're having an extra 20% off these sale prices (code: SALEONSALE). I've posted a some of my favorites below!

1 >> I've been thinking about picking up a couple of these garden stools to use as side tables on our back patio. They're marked down from $195 to $119 + an extra 20% off.

2 >> We have the Pacifica lounge chairs by our pool and love them. I wish they would have made this double lounge chair last year, because I totally would've purchased this! Marked down from $3,495 to $2,699 + 20% off.

3 >> These fun summer napkins made it into my cart along with this headboard that I'm planning to use in our master bedroom.

4 >> This is a crazy good price for a bone inlay mirror of this size ($795 to $500 + 20% off). I'm debating on this one for our entryway.

5 >> Now that we're finished with renovations I'm starting to think about new furniture for our living room. We haven't decided on our sofa yet (leaning towards this sectional), so I can't commit to a coffee table, but if I could this one would be high on the list! Marked down from $1,295 to $800 + an extra 20% off.
