upcoming trends in design

Yesterday I wrote about what is currently trending for 2016, and today I'm focusing on what is forecasted to make its way into the world of interiors. While the minimalism trend that I spoke about yesterday is still going strong, it's predicted that we will be seeing a lot more luxury and mystery in the coming years. I wouldn't necessarily say any of these forecasted trends are surprising, and I'm not sure I'd really call any of these "trends" but rather "classics making a comeback."

fur

You either love it or hate it. I'm in the camp of love it... as long as it's faux. With so many great looking faux options, I never find it necessary to use the real deal.

marble

I'm sure this one comes as no surprise to anyone, as it has been making the rounds in the design world for some time now. I think using it in an unexpected way is the key to keeping it interesting.  Pssst... If you're looking for ways to use marble in your home, but don't like the upkeep, look for a post coming soon!

dark rooms with rich texture

This is the response to the bright white, simple rooms we are currently seeing everywhere. You will start to see cozier spaces with interesting details and a mixture of styles.

mixed metals

People have been doing this for years, but this is a trend that almost made it and then sort of faded off the radar for awhile. Look for this one to show up more often in the coming years.

2016 design trends

You may have seen on Instagram that I spent last weekend at Dallas Market scoping out what is new in the design world. While I was there I took a continuing education class taught by Bill Indurksy of Design Life Network focusing on current and upcoming design trends. None of these trends were revolutionary, but since this is a question I get asked quite often, I thought I'd share with you what they are and give you visual examples on how you can execute them in your own home.

minimalism

2016 is all about living simpler and with less. If you haven't heard about The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up and "Kon-Maried" the heck out of your belongings, then I highly recommend you pick up a copy and try it for yourself. While I believe there are very few people who can realistically live to the degree of minimalism that she suggests — I have implemented her practices and have been able to get rid of so many unnecessary objects cluttering up my home. In the images below everything is able to be seen, enjoyed, and used to its fullest potential, which is how I'm embracing this minimalism trend in my own home.

raw, medium-toned wood

This is a trend that I really love because unfinished wood brings so much texture and interest into a space (especially if you're going for the minimalist look above). You can see a few of my favorite raw wood pieces that I include in my designs here and here.

high contrast

This is the year that it's all about black and white — Very light spaces with dark, contrasting millwork and furniture pieces. This is similar to what's happening in my master bath remodel which I'll be giving an update on next week!

sculptural lighting

Bold, sculptural lighting also made the list of design must-haves this year. I especially love these large Goodman pendants above an island, or this Hudson Valley pendant that I spotted while at market.

linen

This trend wasn't included in the official line-up presented, but it has been on my radar for some time now, and you can find it in nearly every showroom. Linen is everywhere. Bedding, upholstery, slipcovers, drapery... everywhere. I really love how it creates a comfortable, casual feel in a space and keeps even the most formal rooms from feeling too perfect.
